Taking Care of your Original Artwork
An original oil painting often requires some
special care and consideration in order to maintain the quality condition of
it's material workmanship over the years. While there is no need to be
alarmed or obsessive regarding every aspect of maintenance. Some basic
precautions should be taken in order to ensure that there is no fatal damage
or major deterioration of the piece. Unfortunately many people occasionally
make ill-informed decisions which can seriously affect the condition of
their artwork. I will here list some of the basic issues. And as time
permits this area will be updated with more specific information regarding
the care and conservation of original art.
- Extreme fluctuations in temperature and
humidity can greatly affect the tension of the fabric and supports. A
relatively stable temperature and humidity controlled environment is best.
- Direct and prolonged sunlight can possibly fade the
image, and so it is best to hang the piece in a moderately lit area. Direct
sunlight and bright lamps placed close to the canvas are not desirable as
this could essentially cook the artwork, greatly accelerating the natural
aging process.
